COVID-19 Inquiry Examines Government PPE Procurement

Why it matters locally: While the inquiry is national in scope, the findings regarding federal PPE procurement strategies could influence future federal allocations and distribution of medical supplies to states like Alaska during public health emergencies, potentially affecting healthcare readiness across the state's remote communities.

The COVID-19 inquiry has released findings concerning the government's approach to securing personal protective equipment, or PPE, during the pandemic. The report examined the strategies officials employed to plan for and purchase items including gloves and gowns. These procurement activities represented an investment of billions of pounds of taxpayer money. The inquiry reviewed various aspects of the purchasing process. This included the initial assessment of PPE needs and the subsequent execution of contracts. Investigators also analyzed the management of the acquired equipment once it entered government inventory.
