A new Florida law now requires the state’s animal abuse database to include mugshots and aliases for convicted offenders, giving shelters and rescue organizations more tools to screen potential adopters.
The updated database, which previously listed only names, will now feature aliases, dates of birth, race, case information, identifying marks or tattoos, and mugshots.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has until Jan. 1, 2027, to fully integrate this new information into the system.
“This is a resource tool, basically,” said Darino, a database user. “Look their name up, make sure they’re not in the database, so that you don’t give that animal to an animal abuser.”
Supporters believe the added details will help differentiate individuals with common names and better verify a potential adopter’s history, protecting animals.
