Tropical Storm Isaias formed Wednesday, October 7, in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, with potential to become the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season. Watches and warnings are in effect for coastal areas of Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
As of 11 a.m. ET on October 7, the National Hurricane Center reported maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm was moving east-northeast at 8 mph, located approximately 260 miles west-northwest of Progreso, Mexico, and 540 miles south-southwest of the Mississippi River mouth.
A tropical storm watch extends from the Jefferson-Plaquemines Parish line in Louisiana to west of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, and from east of Indian Pass, Florida, to the Aucilla River. A hurricane watch is in effect from Bay St. Louis to Indian Pass. A storm surge watch covers the area from the Mississippi River mouth to Yankeetown, Florida.
The National Hurricane Center forecasts rapid strengthening over the next 48 hours, with Isaias possibly becoming a Category 1 hurricane by Thursday. Tropical storm conditions could impact the north-central Gulf Coast, from southeastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, as early as Friday. Residents should monitor local emergency management advisories.
