This $ 10 reward for runaway slave know as "SMART" was placed by Navy Agent George Willis in the Pensacola Gazette in July 1840. Willis worked at the Pensacola Navy Yard in the 1840's and leased his bondsmen to the Navy.

The map was drawn by Spanish royal cartographer Geronimo Chiaves, and was probably based on accounts by members of the Hernando De Soto expedition (1539-1543). The map was originally published in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1584.
