Storm Surge Watch Issued for Coastal Levy: Life-Threatening Flooding Possible
A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for Coastal Levy County, with life-threatening storm surge of up to 4 feet possible from Tropical Storm Isaias Friday into Saturday.
Coastal Levy County residents are urged to prepare for potential life-threatening storm surge as a Storm Surge Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin, FL, effective today, October 7, at 11:23 AM EDT.
Tropical Storm Isaias, currently located approximately 800 miles west-southwest of Cedar Key, FL, with 45 mph winds moving east-northeast at 8 mph, is forecast to bring significant storm surge Friday into Saturday. Potential peak surge amounts of up to 4 feet are possible along the coast from the Suwannee River to Yankeetown.
Impacts could include inundation with storm surge flooding, damage to buildings near the coast, weakened or washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and damage to marinas and docks. While tropical storm force winds are not currently a concern, the NWS emphasizes that hazards like storm surge can extend far from the storm's center.
Residents should follow advice from local officials regarding evacuations. Now is the time to review emergency plans and kits to protect families and property. For more information on preparedness, visit ready.gov, getagameplan.org, or redcross.org. The next update from NWS Tampa Bay Ruskin, FL, is expected around 5 PM EDT, or sooner if conditions warrant.
