Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Pike County

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Pike County until 11:00 PM UTC tonight, bringing potential for moderate flooding rain and several tornadoes, according to the NWS Peachtree City GA.

Staff Writer

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Pike County, including Zebulon, effective immediately until 11:00 PM UTC tonight, October 8th. The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA issued the watch at 2:52 PM EDT.

While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph), residents should be aware of significant threats from flooding rain and potential tornadoes.

A Flood Watch is in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain, and locally higher amounts, anticipated. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Flooding could impact structures, roads, and parking lots, making driving hazardous. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed any flood watches and warnings.

The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. These tornadoes could cause significant damage, power loss, and communication failures. Residents in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued.
