Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Pike; Flooding & Tornado Threat
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Pike County, including Zebulon, with significant threats of flooding rain and tornadoes, effective October 9 at 4:43 AM EDT and expiring at 8:45 AM EDT.
PIKE COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Pike County, including Zebulon, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA, effective October 9 at 4:43 AM EDT. This watch will expire at 12:45 PM UTC (8:45 AM EDT) on October 9.
Residents should prepare for significant potential impacts from flooding rain and tornadoes, according to the NWS. A Flood Watch is in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and floodwaters could enter structures. Consider protective actions if in a flood-vulnerable area and heed all flood watches and warnings.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for several tornadoes, with a few possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; if a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Scattered tornadoes could cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures.
Wind speeds are forecast to be below tropical storm force, with peak gusts up to 40 mph. Little to no preparations are needed for wind at this time, but ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes or weather.gov/atlanta.
