The Tiny “If–Then” Plan That Keeps Your Day From Hijacking You

You do not need a perfect schedule to stay grounded. One sentence made before the chaos starts can make your next good choice much easier.

Today's Affirmation — I can choose my next step even when the day gets interrupted.

The Intention — Today, I’m using an “if–then” plan: I’ll decide in advance what I want to do when a predictable obstacle appears. This works because the hard part is often not knowing what matters; it’s having to negotiate with yourself while tired, rushed, or staring at 47 unread messages. Pick one likely interruption and give yourself a simple response: “If I start reaching for my phone during focused work, then I’ll write down the urge and return to the next sentence.” The goal is not to become a serene productivity monk. It’s to remove one tiny debate from your day, so your attention has somewhere better to go.

Morning Practice — Take two minutes to complete this sentence: “If ______ happens today, then I will ______.” Make it specific and ordinary. “If I feel overwhelmed by my inbox, then I’ll answer one message that takes less than three minutes.” “If I’m too drained to exercise, then I’ll walk around the block.” “If someone says something irritating, then I’ll take one breath before replying.” Write it somewhere you will actually see it—not in a beautiful notebook destined to become a museum artifact, but in your phone notes, on a sticky note, or beside your coffee.

Evening Reflection — When the moment I planned for arrived today, what choice did I make—and what helped or got in the way?
