A man sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso Thursday evening after he allegedly threatened and attacked a DoorDash driver. The incident occurred about 5:41 p.m. near Washington Road and Davis Road in Columbia County.

Columbia County deputies responded to the scene. The DoorDash driver identified himself as the shooter. Deputies found a man suffering from the gunshot wounds.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage of the altercation. According to witness accounts and deputies' statements, the man approached the DoorDash driver shortly after the driver exited his vehicle. The man demanded a “20 piece” and shoved the driver when he refused. Witnesses described the man as acting erratically and being significantly larger than the DoorDash driver.

The man also approached individuals entering the nearby Asian Market, aggressively yelling and offering them $20. His intentions remained unclear.

When the DoorDash driver returned to his vehicle, the man again demanded a “20 piece.” After the driver refused, the man allegedly stated he would take the vehicle and opened the front passenger-side door. The DoorDash driver, seated in the driver's seat, produced a firearm and warned the man he wanted no further trouble. The man responded that he would take the firearm, moved around the vehicle, and lunged through the open driver's-side door.

The DoorDash driver then fired three shots, striking the man each time. The man who was shot was transported to a local hospital and underwent surgery. Deputies stated that based on the evidence gathered, the DoorDash driver appears to have acted in self-defense. No charges will be filed against the driver at this time, pending the completion of the investigation.
