A firefighter died and two others were injured fighting a large fire Oct. 8 on Marly Drive in Durham. Flames and smoke billowed from the building, its roof engulfed, contrasting with the usually vibrant downtown.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation confirmed the fatality and injuries via social media. Officials have not determined the fire's cause. The building suffered significant damage; its roof collapsed, causing the second floor to fall.
Firefighters were trapped on the first floor during the collapse.
Marly Drive is southeast of downtown Durham, between Raleigh and that city.
Matthews Fire and EMS expressed support on social media, stating, "This heartbreaking loss serves as a stark reminder of the dangers firefighters face every time they answer the call. Behind every uniform is a family, friends, and loved ones who pray for their safe return home."
The department urged community solidarity: "Please join us in keeping the fallen firefighter’s family, friends, and fellow firefighters in your thoughts and prayers."
