Tropical Storm Warning for Webster: Moderate Flooding Possible
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Webster County, issued by NWS Jackson, MS, with moderate flooding from heavy rain a significant concern; residents should prepare for potential evacuations and hazardous driving conditions.
WEBSTER – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Webster County, effective immediately as of 1:00 PM CDT today, October 9. This warning indicates that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the area within the next 36 hours. The warning is set to expire at 9:00 PM UTC tonight.
While peak winds are forecast to be 10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph, remaining below tropical storm force, residents should be aware of potential impacts from heavy rainfall. A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues in vulnerable areas.
Rivers and tributaries may swell, causing localized overflow. Small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches are likely to overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures or weaken foundations. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated due to flooded underpasses, low-lying areas, and overflowing storm drains. Road and bridge closures are possible.
Residents in areas prone to flooding should consider protective actions now. Heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life. No tornadoes are expected at this time.
