Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Wayne County: Prepare for Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Wayne County, including Waynesboro, by NWS Mobile AL, urging residents to prepare for hazardous winds and potential moderate flooding, with the Watch effective until 3:00 PM UTC today.
Wayne County is now under a Tropical Storm Watch, issued at 6:53 AM CDT today, October 9th, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL. Residents, particularly in Waynesboro, should immediately finalize preparations for hazardous wind and potential moderate flooding. The Watch is effective until 3:00 PM UTC today.
Peak wind gusts are forecast between 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. However, there is a potential for winds ranging from 39 to 57 mph. Residents should plan for limited wind damage, including potential harm to porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs and possible scattered power outages. All efforts to protect property should be completed as soon as possible, and residents should move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
Around 1 inch of rain is expected, but the NWS warns of potential for moderate flooding. This could lead to evacuations and rescues, with rivers and small streams potentially overflowing their banks. Flood waters may enter some structures, and driving conditions could become hazardous due to flooded roads. Heed any flood watches and warnings issued.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more local information, contact Wayne County EMA at 601-735-2185 or visit their Facebook page (facebook.com/WayneMSEMA). For storm impacts, refer to the NWS Mobile website (weather.gov/mob).
