Strong Winds Expected in Anchorage, Mat-Su; Exercise Caution
Strong winds are expected today, September 25, 2026, in Anchorage, Eagle River, and the Lower Matanuska Valley, with gusts up to 55 mph in some areas; exercise caution when driving and secure outdoor items.
ANCHORAGE – The National Weather Service (NWS) Anchorage has issued a Special Weather Statement advising residents of strong southeast winds expected today, September 25, 2026, from 5:56 AM AKDT until 4:00 PM AKDT. Peak winds are anticipated from later this afternoon through tonight, gradually diminishing on Saturday.
Residents in the Anchorage Hillside and Turnagain Arm, including South Anchorage, should prepare for winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts reaching 40 to 55 mph. The Anchorage Bowl, Knik River Valley through Butte, and Palmer areas can expect winds of 10 to 25 mph with gusts of 25 to 35 mph. Isolated gusts up to 40 mph are possible in the Butte and Palmer area this Friday afternoon.
Periods of rain will accompany the strong winds for Turnagain Arm and the Anchorage and Eagle River Hillsides. The Anchorage Bowl and Mat-Su region are expected to remain mostly dry until Saturday afternoon.
The NWS urges caution if driving or towing a high-profile vehicle. Additionally, individuals planning outdoor activities should secure any easily lofted objects.
