Trump Vows 100% Tariffs on European Goods Over Digital Tax Plans
Donald Trump said he would impose 100% tariffs on all European imports if countries implement taxes on digital services. The threat targets nations considering or enacting levies on tech companies' online operations.
Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on all goods imported from any country that enacts a tax on digital services, according to a social media post from the former president.
"Please let this statement serve to represent that any Country that imposes such a Tax will immediately be met with a 100% TARIFF on any and all Goods sent to the United States of America," Trump wrote.
The warning addresses a growing international tax debate over how to levy charges on large technology companies' digital operations. Several European nations have explored or implemented digital services taxes targeting revenues from online advertising, data sales, and software licensing.
France, Austria, and Italy have enacted versions of such taxes in recent years. The European Union has also discussed a bloc-wide digital tax as part of broader efforts to ensure large tech companies pay more tax in jurisdictions where they generate revenue.
Trump's threatened response matches earlier positions he took during his presidency, when his administration launched tariffs on European goods and pursued aggressive trade negotiations. The 100% rate would eliminate any price advantage for European exports to the United States, making products prohibitively expensive for American importers and consumers.
Digital services taxes have drawn criticism from the U.S. government and American tech companies, which argue such levies target American firms disproportionately. The Trump administration previously threatened retaliation against France and other countries over digital tax proposals.
The European Union and individual European nations have framed digital services taxes as necessary to ensure tech giants pay their fair share of taxes where they operate and earn revenue.
