Extreme Storm Surge Warning for South Walton: Shelter Immediately

SOUTH WALTON, FL – The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee has issued an Extreme Storm Surge Warning for South Walton, effective immediately, October 9, at 10:57 PM EDT. This warning affects Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, and remains in effect until 7:00 AM UTC on October 10, 2026.
Residents in these areas must shelter immediately from life-threatening winds. Peak wind forecasts range from 55-75 mph with gusts up to 95 mph, with a potential for winds greater than 110 mph. Catastrophic wind damage is expected. Move to the safest place inside your shelter now.
Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. A Flood Watch is also in effect with potential for major flooding and evacuations likely. Heed all flood watches and warnings. The tornado threat has decreased but a few tornadoes are still possible. Move quickly to the safest place within your shelter if a tornado warning is issued.
