A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Washington County, including the communities of Chatom and Millry, effective immediately. The National Weather Service in Mobile, AL, issued this alert today, October 8, at 4:14 AM CDT. Residents must take immediate action to prepare for dangerous wind, significant flooding, and the potential for tornadoes.

Strong tropical storm force winds are anticipated, with peak wind forecasts of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. However, there is a potential for winds ranging from 58 to 73 mph. Efforts to protect life and property should be underway. Significant wind damage is possible, including damage to roofing, siding, mobile homes, and several trees. Unsecured lightweight objects could become dangerous projectiles. Act now to complete preparations before hazardous winds arrive.

Flooding rain is also a significant threat, with peak rainfall amounts of 3-6 inches, and locally higher amounts. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers, streams, and canals may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.

The situation is also somewhat favorable for tornadoes. While the potential is limited, isolated tornadoes can hinder emergency plans and cause localized damage, including power and communication disruptions. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate to a safer location before hazardous weather. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
