Sumter County Council Meeting Recap (April 28, 2026)
Sumter County Council Tuesday evening dealt with land use matters and more during its April 28, 2026, meeting.Chairman James T. McCain Jr., at the outset of the meeting, noted there was a Proclamation before Council declaring April 26-May 3 as “Soil and Water Conservation District Week.”Council approved it.Sumter County Attorney Johnathan Bryan then spoke about an ordinance to approve an agreement with the Town of Mayesville concerning the Sumter County Magistrate Court and Mayesville town offenses. First reading was approved.He then spoke about an ordinance to approve a utility easement over property located on University Drive. First reading was approved.Bryan then spoke about an ordinance to establish waste tire acceptance and tipping fee regulations in conformity with Act. No. 33 of 2025, enacted by the General Assembly, and other related matters, including identification of the sole site in the County for accepting waste tires. Second reading was approved.McCain reported on an earlier Budget Workshop and explained that Sumter County Administrator Gary Mixon gave a preliminary briefing and noted “we are on schedule.” Mixon told Council members it would be a tough budget, and McCain said, “we will work through it” and come up with a balanced budget.Mixon told Council and the audience that initial reports show a revenue deficit of $3,722,650; the Capital Fund currently shows a deficit of $6,431,136. There’s a lot of work to be done, he said, and he’s confident it will be completed.During Public Comments, a resident proposed a kickball game that might interest Council and the School District, while also encouraging people to register to vote.The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
