MOBILE, Ala. — What’s next after college? At the University of Mobile, students are reminded that their future is about more than simply finding a job – it’s about discovering how God has uniquely designed them to use their gifts, skills and education for His purposes. Through the Office of Career Services, students are equipped to steward well the education, skills and gifts God has entrusted to them as they prepare for what’s next. Whether connecting with employers, strengthening a résumé, preparing for an interview or exploring graduate school, Career Services helps students see how they are Designed for More and pursue their future with purpose and excellence. “One thing I want students to know is that no matter where they are in their educational journey at UM, it’s never too late to start preparing for their career,” said Lawrencine Mason, director of Career Services. “Students often know more than they realize, and sometimes they just need someone to help them recognize the skills and experiences they already have.” Career Ready The fall semester will feature two major opportunities for students to meet with potential employers and explore career possibilities. The UM Federal Work-Study Job Fair will be held Monday, Sept. 14, from noon to 2:20 p.m. in Ram Hall, connecting students with on-campus employment opportunities. The UM Career & Internship Fair will be held Thursday, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1:20 p.m. in Ram Hall. Students will have the opportunity to meet employers, explore internships and learn about career opportunities in a variety of fields. Panels of Preparation Career Services also will host three professional career panels throughout the semester, giving students an inside look at careers connected to their academic programs. Workshop Wednesdays The fall Workshop Wednesday series will provide practical, hands-on guidance students can immediately apply to their career journey. All workshops will be held in the Bedsole Classroom. Workshops include: Sept. 9 Job Search Strategies — 3:30 p.m. Résumé Writing — 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 Building Your Professional Network — 3:30 p.m. Career & Grad School Fair Prep — 4:30 p.m. Oct. 14 Interview Skills — 3:30 p.m. Navigating Salary Negotiations — 4:30 p.m. Oct. 28 Job Search Strategies — 3:30 p.m. Building Your Professional Network — 4:30 p.m. Nov. 11 Résumé Writing — 3:30 p.m. Interview Skills — 4:30 p.m. Resources for the Journey Career Services offers students support beyond the classroom through individual career coaching appointments, résumé and interview resources, job search tools, graduate school preparation resources and career assessment tools. Students can schedule a career coaching appointment through Handshake by selecting the Career Center and clicking the blue “Schedule an Appointment” button. The office also offers the Emerging Professionals Student Worker Program, providing students with opportunities to develop professional skills and gain experience as they prepare for the workplace. Students can access additional career resources, including résumé and cover letter samples, interview preparation worksheets, career pathway guides, professional communication resources, job search sites and graduate school preparation tools, through the University of Mobile Office of Career Services website at umobile.edu/career-services. The fall Career Services lineup begins Wednesday, Sept. 9, with Workshop Wednesday sessions on Job Search Strategies at 3:30 p.m. and Résumé Writing at 4:30 p.m. in the Bedsole Classroom.
