Academic Advising About Academic Advising Overview Academic advising is a collaborative process in which students and their academic advisors work together to develop educational plans and strategies to achieve their academic and life goals. Academic advising is an integral part of the educational experience for students at Miami University. Effective academic advising can help students to: Become self-directed learners and decision makers Select appropriate courses based on educational and career goals Navigate university policies and procedures Utilize campus resources Develop a plan for academic success Enrich their educational experience Advising Models Different advising models exist across campus. Some departments and majors provide advising through professional advisors. Other departments and majors utilize faculty advising models. Some schools and departments combine these two models. Students should check with their department to determine their specific advising model. Who is my Advisor? Students can find information about their academic advisor by viewing their Student Success Network in Navigate. Responsibilities of the Student Schedule regular meetings with your academic advisor.
