Sneaker Wave Threat for Coastal Areas Today: Stay Back From Ocean
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for coastal Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties until 10:00 PM PDT today, October 12, due to an increased threat of dangerous sneaker waves; residents are urged to stay far back from the ocean.
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for coastal areas of Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties until 10:00 PM PDT this evening, October 12. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Eureka has issued this alert due to a very long period westerly swell, significantly increasing the threat of dangerous sneaker waves.
These large, unexpected waves can sweep across beaches without warning, potentially pulling individuals into the sea from rocks, jetties, and sandy shores. Sneaker waves are also powerful enough to move large objects like logs, posing a crushing hazard to anyone in their path. The NWS advises that the risk will intensify as winds weaken throughout the day.
Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution. Do not be deceived by seemingly calm ocean conditions, as sneaker waves can strike after up to 30 minutes of smaller waves. Avoid rocks and jetties, and stay clear of steep beaches. Maintain a significant distance from the water's edge and never turn your back on the ocean. This advisory applies to Coastal Del Norte, Northern Coastal Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Coastal Mendocino counties.
