Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Tuscaloosa, Prepare for Wind and Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Tuscaloosa from the National Weather Service, warning of hazardous winds up to 45 mph and moderate flooding, with preparations advised to begin immediately.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Tuscaloosa by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, effective October 8 at 4:07 PM CDT. Residents should begin preparations immediately as hazardous wind and moderate flooding are anticipated.
Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect large tree limbs to break, and some trees may snap or uproot, potentially making roads impassable. Scattered power and communications outages are also a possibility.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts. This poses a potential for moderate flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could become swollen, and small streams, creeks, and ditches may overflow. Floodwaters could enter structures, and rapid inundation is possible in underpasses, low-lying areas, and areas with poor drainage. Driving conditions may become hazardous, leading to road and bridge closures.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time, though showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur.
Residents are advised to act now to complete preparations for hazardous wind. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, and protective actions should be considered if you are in an area vulnerable to flooding. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
This alert is effective until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
