Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Tuscaloosa: Prepare for High Winds, Flooding

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Tuscaloosa by the NWS, warning of hazardous winds up to 45 mph and 2-4 inches of rain, with a Flood Watch also in effect until 12:15 PM UTC today.

Tuscaloosa residents are urged to finalize preparations for hazardous wind and moderate flooding as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for the area by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL. The watch was issued at 4:08 AM CDT on October 9 and remains effective until 12:15 PM UTC today.

Wind gusts up to 45 mph are anticipated, with potential sustained winds between 39 to 57 mph. This could lead to limited damage to property, downed tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Residents should secure loose outdoor objects and move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect some roads to become impassable due to debris.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 2-4 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could overflow, and floodwaters may enter structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous in low-lying areas, with potential road and bridge closures. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings.

The NWS reports that tornadoes are not expected. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
