U.S. Operations Target Houthi Sites in Yemen Following Vessel Attacks

United States military forces carried out multiple strikes targeting Houthi installations in Yemen on Saturday. The operations focused on missile storage facilities, unmanned aerial systems, air defense systems, and radar sites. These actions marked the third series of strikes against Houthi targets within 24 hours.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated the strikes aimed to disrupt and degrade the Houthis' ability to threaten international shipping. He confirmed the attacks took place at 3:45 a.m. Sanaa time, affecting 13 Houthi locations. He also indicated the U.S. will take further protective measures if necessary.

Admiral Daniel Prag described the Houthi actions as a clear defiance of international appeals. He noted the Houthis launched 18 drones, two anti-ship cruise missiles, and one anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen into international shipping lanes on January 16. U.S. and UK warships intercepted these projectiles. No ships sustained damage or reported injuries during that specific incident.

Earlier joint operations by the U.S. and UK on January 11 targeted over 60 Houthi sites. These sites included command and control nodes, ammunition depots, launching systems, production facilities, and air defense radar systems. These previous strikes also followed Houthi attacks on commercial vessels.

Since November, Houthi forces have conducted at least 27 attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. They claim these actions support Palestinians in Gaza. Major shipping companies have rerouted vessels around Africa, a longer and more expensive journey, due to the increased risks in the Red Sea.

Despite the military actions, diplomatic discussions regarding the region continue. Brian Hook, a former State Department official, stated on January 16 that the administration had provided an avenue for de-escalation with Iran through Oman. He described an agreement where the U.S. would not confiscate Iranian oil if Iran prevented attacks by its proxies. However, Hook indicated this agreement did not hold. Additionally, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss regional tensions.
