Camden Newton Avenue $6M Reconstruction Project

Camden Breaks Ground on $6 Million Newton Avenue Reconstruction

Camden officials broke ground Monday on a $6 million reconstruction of Newton Avenue between Kaighn Avenue and Pine Street, targeting improved traffic flow and safer pedestrian access in the Bergen Square neighborhood.

The project includes new asphalt, traffic signals, ADA-accessible curb ramps, concrete sidewalks, and streetscape improvements with brick pavers and decorative lighting. Workers will also upgrade drainage infrastructure and add traffic striping and raised pavement markers. The work is expected to finish by summer 2027.

Commissioner Al Dyer said the upgrades are necessary as the city invests in the Cooper Landing and Bergen Square neighborhoods. "This project will provide much needed improvements for this major thoroughfare in Camden City," Dyer said.

Mayor Victor Carstarphen noted that Camden and Camden County have paved more than 300 roads since 2021. "This $6 million Newton Avenue project signifies the start of new critical roadway investments for 2026," he said.
