Patricia DeGroff of Schoharie, Beloved Teacher and Mother, Dies at 97

Patricia Ann Depew DeGroff of Schoharie June 12, 1928 – May 26, 2026, was as good and loving a mom, grandmother, teacher, and person as ever lived. Her love and beautiful smile were given unconditionally. Her welcoming, happy, “any day I wake up is a good day” outlook and her self-effacing humor never wavered as she faced life with grace and gratitude.Pat was born in Glens Falls NY to Esther (Dunn) and Frank Depew. She spent part of her early childhood in New Hampshire with family returning to NY during middle school to attend and graduate from Argyle High School in 1946 and SUNY Plattsburgh in1950. She came to Schoharie to teach home economics. Soon thereafter, she met, fell in love with and married Kenneth DeGroff.Pat paused her teaching career as she and Ken started their family. Once all five children were in school she returned to Schoharie Central and was so dedicated to her students and job that she never missed a day in nearly 20 more years of teaching.Pat and Ken raised their family on Schoharie Hill where she lived for 64 years. From her home, kitchen and her classroom she blessed this world with her love through practical kindness, homemade specialties and heartfelt letters. Even as a busy working mom of five she never raised her voice, instead perfecting “the look” that would stop any child from whatever behavior she felt needed to be stopped. Though Ken passed away in 2005 she kept their home on the hill, filling it with family celebrations until 2019.A devout Christian, Pat was active in both the United Presbyterian and Schoharie Reformed Churches. In her nineties she enjoyed living with Becky and Tom in the village and then Ingersoll Place in Schenectady. She returned to Schoharie to reside with family under the care of Community Hospice. As was Pat’s way she “recovered” and no longer required Hospice services. With age comes frailty though and she was eventually readmitted for home hospice through Helios Care. In addition to her family, loving care was also provided by Ardyth, Sandy, Sue, Tina and Val. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at the home of her son Tim and his wife Angela.Pat’s spirit survives in her five children; Jeffrey (Connie) of Richmondville, Dave (Lori) of New Smyrna Beach FL, Becky (Tom Hitter) of Schoharie, Timothy (Angela) of Schoharie and Kip (Vicki) of Middleburgh, 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandsons, her sister Colleen Towle of Chester NH and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Pat’s memory to the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, the Schoharie Reformed Church or a charity of your choice. On Sunday, June 7th at 1 PM Pat’s life will be celebrated at the Schoharie Reformed Church 258 Main Street Schoharie NY. The Langan Funeral Home of Schoharie and the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home of Cobleskill are assisting the DeGroff family.

Guilderland Schools Recognized for Music Education

The Guilderland Central School District has been named one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education for the 16th time, earning recognition from the NAMM Foundation for its commitment to music as part of a well‑rounded education. The national designation honors school districts that demonstrate strong support for music education through funding, participation, instructional time, facilities and community involvement. “This recognition reflects the daily work happening in our classrooms and rehearsal spaces,” said Robert Winans, instructional administrator for fine and performing arts. “Seeing students grow in confidence, creativity and collaboration through music is incredibly rewarding, and this honor reinforces how much our community values and supports that journey.” Music instruction in the district begins in kindergarten and continues through high school, with programs in band, orchestra, chorus and advanced performance ensembles. More than 2,000 students participate in music each year, performing in schools and throughout the community. Students also compete at the regional and state levels through organizations such as NYSSMA and NYSBDA. Winans pointed to future facility enhancements at GHS approved by voters as part of the 2025 capital project, which include new choral, band, and orchestra rooms. “These dedicated spaces will enhance instruction, support collaboration and provide students with environments that match the excellence of their work,” he said. “They will help ensure our facilities meet the needs of our growing music programs for years to come.” The district’s continued recognition reflects a longstanding commitment to the arts, supported by educators, families and the broader community. Red Grammer Brings Music and Kindness to Lynnwood Elementary

Acclaimed children’s musician Red Grammer brought music, movement and messages of kindness during a recent performance at Lynnwood Elementary School. Grammer has shared a connection with the Lynnwood community since the early 1990s, when the school began using his music to reinforce themes of kindness, friendship, acceptance and tolerance. His songs remain a fixture at school events, including assemblies, morning meetings, performances and “Share and Celebrate” gatherings. Lynnwood retirees, who may have first heard his music on cassette tapes and CDs, are honored each year with a rendition of “I think you’re wonderful!”  Lynnwood students responded enthusiastically to the concert, singing and signing along throughout the performance. One especially memorable moment came when Grammer played the opening notes of “Teaching Peace.” Students immediately joined in, performing the song’s sign-language motions together; a scene that captured the sense of joy and unity Lynnwood strives to foster. Retiring second-grade teacher Chris White made a surprise appearance on stage after Grammer invited her to join him during the performance. White, who will retire in June after 35 years at Lynnwood, was met with smiles from students and staff who associate Grammer’s music with the school’s long-standing traditions. The performance was designed to engage a wide range of learners, incorporating multiple languages, sign language, dance and audience participation. At one point, Grammer invited student volunteers to help write verses to his song “Down by the Sea.” Red’s visit also reinforced many of the character traits emphasized at Lynnwood, including kindness, appreciation for others and an “other people matter” mindset.  “Red Grammer’s performance beautifully captured the power of music and song,” said music teacher Michelle Jantson. “Coming together as a school to sing about friendship, kindness, honesty, integrity and peace–the very character traits we strive to nurture in our students–was truly moving.” Best known for his landmark recording Teaching Peace, Grammer has earned Grammy and Parents’ Choice honors during a career that spans decades. His music continues to connect with and inspire audiences of all ages. The post Red Grammer visits Lynnwood Elementary appeared first on Guilderland Central Schools.

Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees Antonio Rivera Antonio Rivera has called Guilderland home for more than 13 years and is pursuing a second term on the Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees. As a committed member of the community, Rivera believes libraries are vital safe havens for all, providing services at no cost and ensuring free access to information, park passes, notary services, and programs for both adults and children. “The Guilderland Public Library is a community hub that has seen significant growth in the past several years, and I would like to help continue this progress,” he said. Rivera’s connection to the library is filled with great memories; when his children were younger, they took part in numerous library programs that brought joy and learning into their lives. Now, his older son and wife are enthusiastic readers who regularly borrow books, with each visit to the library sparking fond recollections. His family also enjoys borrowing games from the library, creating cherished moments together. In addition to his community contributions, Rivera is a pharmacist with more than 18 years of experience at the Albany VA Hospital. He has a bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from Binghamton University, a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and a healthcare MBA from Clarkson University. Matthew Grunert Matthew Grunert has been a resident of Guilderland for 17 years and is pursuing a second term on the Guilderland Public Library Board of Trustees. Grunert views libraries as his refuge, having relied on them for learning and entertainment in childhood and volunteering there during summers. University libraries offered the same calm in young adulthood, and they remain a significant part of his adult life. “This past year I’ve worked to modernize our library’s policies, negotiate contracts with our members’ labor unions, facilitate development of our physical building, and build stronger ties between the town and school boards. However, there’s still more work to do as we build our library into Guilderland’s living room; our community’s quintessential third place: calm, comfortable, and accessible; publicly funded, and for the public,” Grunert said. Grunert is an information technology consultant for a local nonprofit supporting New York’s governments, managing enterprise software projects. Previously, he was a systems administrator for the New York State Office of the State Comptroller and served as a firefighter and fire commissioner. He is a certified therapy pet team member with his dog, Oatmeal, involved in Paws2Read, and actively participates in local YMCA activities and curling at the Albany Curling Club. He holds an MBA, a bachelor’s degree in computer science, and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from SUNY Albany.
