Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Terrell County: Prepare for Winds, Flooding, Tornadoes
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Terrell County, including Dawson, warning of possible tropical storm-force winds, moderate flooding, and tornadoes within the next 48 hours; residents should take immediate action to secure property and prepare for hazardous conditions.
Day.News – Terrell County residents, including those in Dawson, need to take immediate action as a Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL, effective October 8 at 11:06 AM EDT. This watch indicates that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.
Prepare for hazardous wind with speeds of 10-20 mph and gusts up to 35 mph, with a potential for 39 to 57 mph winds. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Secure outdoor objects like porches, awnings, carports, and sheds to prevent damage. Be aware of potential power and communication outages, and hazardous driving conditions due to debris and fallen tree limbs.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate flooding is a significant concern, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Avoid driving through flooded roads.
The NWS also reports conditions are favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly. Tornadoes can cause significant damage and hinder emergency operations.
This alert is effective until October 8, 2026, at 7:15 PM UTC. For more information, visit the NWS Tallahassee website at https://www.weather.gov/tallahassee or the Georgia Emergency Management Agency at https://ready.ga.gov.
