Monroe County Medical Students Showcase Research at St. Luke's
Curiosity in Action: Medical Students Shine at Santo Longo Research Day May 16, 2024 At St. Luke’s, we are committed to training the next generation of healthcare heroes. Recently, medical students put their research skills to the test at the annual Santo Longo Research Day. The event was a wonderful opportunity for students to present their research findings, learn from each other, and network with faculty members. The Santo Longo Research Day is just one of the many ways that St. Luke’s supports medical education. We are proud to partner with local medical schools to provide students with hands-on learning experiences. These experiences help students develop the skills they need to succeed in their medical careers. We are grateful to all the students, faculty, and staff who made the Santo Longo Research Day a success. We are excited to see what the future holds for these bright young minds!

Refuge Coffee Launches Fundraiser for New Truck
I have the privilege of launching our next campaign here at Refuge: Driven for Dreams We’re raising funds for a brand new Refuge Coffee Truck! This new truck will createmore jobs for our immigrant community, expand welcome, and help make dreamspossible for many families. It will also honor our founder’s husband, Bill “Chief”Murray, whose legacy lives on in our community. And, because our two OG trucks are no longer roadworthy, we’ll get back out there on the road! Thanks to the generosity of several donors, every donation you make will bedoubled dollar for dollar, up to $50,000. We are raising $50,000 by the end of May to meet our $100,000 goal! Unlocking dreams with you, Hung Dear friends of Refuge, Welcoming the foreigner means seeing and embracing those who are too often overlooked. This year, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside Kitti, the founder of Refuge Coffee. You can’t spend time with her without hearing a story about her husband Bill Murray and the way he welcomed his neighbors. Bill passed away three years ago, and I really wish I’d had the chance to get to know him, but I know him through others. This campaign honors Bill’s legacy of turning strangers into friends—a legacy that continues here at Refuge. Over the next month, each Weekly Pour email will share Bill’s impact through the eyes of his four sons. Each one reflects on how their father modeled welcome, honored the dignity of every person, and shaped the lives of those around him. Why a new truck? There are two reasons we are launching a campaign for a new truck. First, this campaign reflects the values that drive our mission: creating practical pathways of dignity for refugees and immigrants, developing jobs, and opening opportunities that help people dream again. Second, competition within the growing coffee industry makes it essential for us to take coffee to businesses, schools, and communities with as much excellence and vigor as possible. We love our carts, but we continually get requests for our signature truck, and we understand why. This truck will be our new, road-worthy Refuge catering truck, and we can’t wait to roll it out to you, where you live, work, and play! Honoring welcome with you, Hung

Hundreds of Students Receive Helmets in Marathon Safety Event
"Monroe County, Fla. – On March 12, 2026, the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County (DOH-Monroe), in partnership with multiple community organizations, successfully fitted 305 students at Stanley Switlik Elementary School in Marathon with free, properly fitted bicycle helmets during a large-scale bicycle and pedestrian safety education event. This effort brought together DOH-Monroe, the Monroe County School District (MCSD), Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s WalkSafe®/BikeSafe® program, Key Colony Beach Police Department, Florida Keys Outreach Coalition for the Homeless, Inc., and more. The free helmets were provided through the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycling Safety Resource Center (PedBike SRC), funded by the Florida Department of Transportation. “This was the first time we were able to coordinate a mass event like this in a single day,” said Ivona Coleman, community health improvement manager for DOH-Monroe. “We are in the process of scheduling more MCSD schools for bicycle and pedestrian safety education events in the future. Our vision is to provide this education and free resources to every student in our county.” “This is the first time we have had a large-scale event like this at Stanley Switlik Elementary, and we are very pleased with the education provided and the free, properly fitted bicycle helmets for so many of our students,” said Deputy William Daniels, School Resource Officer. “I personally saw a few kids wearing bright, shiny, new bicycle helmets at the Marathon Seafood Festival this year.” Community partners representing the following organizations: DOH-Monroe, the Monroe County School District (MCSD), Monroe County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s WalkSafe®/BikeSafe® program, Key Colony Beach Police Department, Florida Keys Outreach Coalition for the Homeless, Inc. Elizabeth Cabrera from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s WalkSafe®/BikeSafe® program gives an educational presentation to the students. School Resource Officer Deputy William Daniels gives a safety demonstration by dropping a watermelon inside a bicycle helmet. DOH-Monroe’s Ivona Coleman fits Evelyn Alfonso for her new bicycle helmet. Frances Merryman, Poppy Harrington, Liliana Wallace, Kimberly Bravo, and Aleksandra Shahsavan pose with their new fitted bicycle helmets. ### About the Florida Department of Health The Department, nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, works to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts.
