URGENT: Life-Threatening Storm Surge and Flooding for Coastal Taylor
Coastal Taylor County, including Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee, is under an immediate and extreme Storm Surge Warning with life-threatening flooding, potential tornadoes, and major rainfall expected through Saturday morning.
Coastal Taylor County residents, particularly in Keaton Beach and Steinhatchee, are under an immediate and extreme Storm Surge Warning. The National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee issued this warning today, October 9, at 8:28 AM EDT, effective through Saturday morning for storm surge and expiring at 4:30 PM UTC today for the general alert.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground is possible in surge-prone areas. All flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, leading to potential major flooding. Emergency plans should account for extensive rainfall flooding, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately. Failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The situation is also favorable for several tornadoes, with significant impacts possible, including damage to structures and power loss. If a tornado warning is issued, be prepared to shelter quickly.
Wind speeds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with gusts up to 35 mph. While additional wind impacts are not expected, conditions may still be gusty. Listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness in case the forecast changes.
