Tampa CRA Funds 22 Workforce Housing Units Downtown
The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency committed $4 million to convert 22 apartments at The Residences at 801 East Whiting into workforce housing for households earning $64,250 to $112,420 annually.
The units are part of a new 104-unit apartment complex. Three one-bedroom apartments include private balconies with downtown views and rent for $1,606 monthly at the lowest income tier, compared to $2,100 for market-rate units of similar size. The affordability period lasts 50 years.
"Every affordable unit we can secure means one more teacher, one more service worker, one more nurse, first responder, or other working class resident can live in the heart of our city," CRA Board Chairwoman Naya Young said.
Craig Bazarsky, co-developer for BendinRoad Development, said the project addresses housing costs that have pushed workers away from downtown. "This ensures that the people who contribute to the city's success can live and thrive here," he said.
The workforce units feature modern amenities designed for compact urban living, including multifunctional furniture that maximizes space.
