Tampa Reaches 8,300 Affordable Housing Units
Tampa has completed or begun construction on more than 8,300 affordable housing units since 2019, moving closer to Mayor Jane Castor's goal of 10,000 affordable homes.
The city has invested over $100 million in affordable housing initiatives. Roughly 4,100 units are finished, with another 4,000 in active development. Major projects include Army/Navy redevelopment in North Downtown, which will add more than 1,100 units with over 700 reserved for income-eligible households.
Carlton Mallard, an East Tampa resident, received $147,000 in renovations through the city's Housing Rehabilitation and Renovation Program. His home got a new roof, hurricane-impact windows and doors, updated electrical and plumbing systems, new flooring and cabinets, lead paint remediation, and air conditioning. Mallard had lived without air conditioning for decades and went four months without power in 2025 after a blown fuse.
"This is what housing affordability looks like in practice," said Abbye Feeley, administrator for development and economic opportunity for the City of Tampa. "Now Carlton Mallard can finally obtain homeowners insurance and continue living safely in the neighborhood his family has called home for generations."
The Housing Rehabilitation and Renovation Program offers financial assistance to income-qualified Tampa homeowners. The city will accept new applications starting in mid-June through its online portal.
