Tampa police have charged a 74-year-old man in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman on Fowler Avenue over the weekend.

Alan Barber, born July 29, 1952, faces a murder charge following the incident that occurred Saturday, October 3, 2026. Acting Police Chief Brett Owen stated, “Violence is not the answer to conflict, and there is never a disagreement that should end with the tragic loss of a life. This man chose to end an argument by using a gun, and he will now face justice for his decision.”

Investigators determined that Barber and the victim, who had known each other for more than two decades, were traveling together in a white Chevrolet pickup truck. Barber drove while the victim occupied the passenger seat. An argument that reportedly began at a local restaurant escalated inside the vehicle. Barber fatally shot the victim before stopping the truck in a business parking lot.

Tampa police officers responded to the scene and recovered the firearm used in the shooting. The vehicle was impounded as evidence.

Barber was taken into custody without incident on October 3, 2026, and transported to the Orient Road Jail, where he was formally charged with murder. The Tampa Police Victim Advocate will work with the victim’s family and loved ones to connect them with available resources.
