Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Talladega and Sylacauga

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Talladega and Sylacauga by the NWS, warning of hazardous winds, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes; residents should prepare now.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, affecting Talladega and Sylacauga. This watch is in effect as of October 8 at 4:07 PM CDT and expires October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC.

Residents in these areas should plan for hazardous winds of equivalent tropical storm force, with peak gusts potentially reaching 45 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Potential impacts include damage to porches, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes, along with broken tree limbs and scattered power outages. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous.

A Flood Watch is also in effect. Emergency plans should account for moderate flooding from heavy rain, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. Consider protective actions if you are in a flood-vulnerable area. Heed any flood watches and warnings; evacuations and rescues are possible due to potential significant impacts like swollen rivers and inundated roadways.

The situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes. Emergency plans should include the potential for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate to a safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly. Limited tornado impacts could include damaged roofs and downed trees.
