Wind Advisory Issued for Western NC: Prepare for Gusts Up To 60 MPH
A Wind Advisory has been issued for multiple Western North Carolina counties from midnight tonight until Sunday morning, with gusts up to 60 mph expected, potentially causing power outages and difficult travel conditions.
Residents across Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Swain, Haywood, Buncombe, Graham, Northern Jackson, Macon, and Southern Jackson, and Transylvania counties should prepare for strong winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) Greenville-Spartanburg SC has issued a Wind Advisory effective from midnight tonight, October 9, until 8:00 AM EDT on Sunday, October 11. This alert is rated as 'Moderate' in severity and 'Expected' in urgency.
For elevations above 3500 feet, a High Wind Warning is in effect, with east winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 60 mph anticipated. Below 3500 feet, a Wind Advisory predicts east winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph.
Impacts include potential downed trees and power lines, especially in higher elevations, where widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles. In lower elevations, gusty winds may move unsecured objects and cause isolated power outages from falling tree limbs.
The NWS advises residents to remain in the lower levels of their homes during the windstorm and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Exercise caution if driving, as strong winds can make it difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Stay tuned to local radio, television, or NOAA Weather Radio for further information.
