Our Crisis Centers
Our Crisis Centers Learn more about our network of crisis contact centers and what you can do to support them. Find your local crisis center. What is a Crisis Center? Crisis centers answer 988 Lifeline calls, texts, and chats. They provide local care with national support. A crisis center is a resource for individuals in need of mental health support. They provide mental health services and emotional support for their state or local communities. Most crisis centers are non-profit and many utilize trained volunteers as well as mental health professionals. Your local crisis center usually serves your entire community, often 24/7 and free of charge. These centers connect callers to providers in their community that can support their needs. Crisis centers answer calls, texts, chats for the 988 Lifeline, as well as local helplines and other resources such mobile services. Crisis centers also provide training and educational resources on suicide prevention and mental wellness. They are also a resource for mental health professionals seeking advice on best practices. All of the services a crisis center offers strengthen their local community and the state as a whole. How do I find my local crisis center? All of our crisis centers within the U.S. and U.S. territories can be found in the Crisis Centers by State and U.S. Territory listing. Crisis Centers by State and U.S. Territory Crisis Centers Support the 988 Lifeline The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) is made up of an expansive network of over 200 local – and state–funded crisis contact centers located across the United States and its territories. The counselors at these local crisis centers answer calls, chats, and texts from people in emotional distress that the 988 Lifeline receives daily. The 988 Lifeline’s crisis centers provide the specialized care of a local community with the support of a national network. The 988 Lifeline’s united network provides at-risk individuals across the country with a single, well-known phone number and name. This unity enables the 988 Lifeline to assure that centers are accredited, provide training for counselors, and disseminate standards and best practices. Calls to the 988 Lifeline are routed to their local center. Local counselors at crisis centers are familiar with community mental health resources, and can therefore provide referrals to local services. Why Crisis Centers Need Your Help The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is an effective, life-saving safety net for those experiencing mental health crises, as shown by research. Although the 988 Lifeline is a national program, the funds that sustain the network’s crisis centers come from state and local contributors. Many of the crisis centers in our network require more funding and resources in order to continue operating and growing. Crisis centers are a key component of mental healthcare within each county and state across the United States. The centers act as a safety net for those at serious risk, especially those with nowhere else to turn. Our Crisis Center Network How To Support a Crisis Center There are many ways to support the crisis centers in our network. First, find the 988 Lifeline crisis center nearest to you. Crisis Centers by State and U.S. Territory Donate Interested in donating to your local crisis center directly? Go to their website or contact your nearest 988 Lifeline crisis center directly and see how you can contribute. Volunteer Many 988 Lifeline centers have volunteer opportunities, and a number of them depend largely on volunteer help. Reach out directly to your local crisis center and ask them how you can help. Advocate for Them If you have been helped by a crisis center or know someone who has, you know how important they can be to people in your community. Let your crisis center know how you appreciate them, and ask how your voice can assist them in advocating for more funds and resources to continue growing and serving your community. Organize A Fundraiser Organize a fundraiser in your community to help support your local crisis center and donate a percentage or all of the proceeds. Contact your local 988 Lifeline center and see how your event might benefit their work, and make it happen! Margate Fire Cadet Program
The Margate Fire Department Cadet program began in 1992 to offer insight into career opportunities and hands-on participation in fire rescue. The program was designed for anyone still in high school. They must be physically able to perform the necessary tasks of a Firefighter Paramedic. Training Cadets receive training in CPR, First Aid on the First Responder level, search and rescue, hose handling, ladder techniques, ropes and knots, handling and use of self-contained breathing apparatus, and proper use of most fire-rescue equipment. After completing a three-month probationary period in the program, Cadets are allowed to ride along on Margate Fire Department rescue or engine companies. Before riding, Cadets must obtain a CPR card, basic medical skills, and demonstrate knowledge of the location and use of all equipment on the apparatus they are riding on. Ride-Along When Cadets ride along with the members of the Fire Department, they will perform the same functions as the firefighter/paramedics such as apparatus and station maintenance, station training, and emergency calls. On fire calls, Cadets are not allowed to enter the burning building, but they do perform other valuable tasks. These tasks include laying hose, changing SCBA bottles, salvage and overhaul, and assisting the driver/engineer with his functions. On rescue calls, Cadets assist paramedics by taking vital signs, setting up IVs, gathering patient information, holding traction, retrieving equipment, and providing general patient care. The ride-along program gives Cadets the unique opportunity to observe and perform with a team of professionals during real emergency situations while staying safe. Demonstrations Cadets perform various demonstrations for local events such as National Night Out, Veterans Day, Fourth of July and city-wide open house. In addition, Cadets also tour other fire departments such as Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale Airport, and the Fire Academy. Meetings The Cadets meet every Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meeting takes place at: Station 58600 N. Rock Island RoadMargate, FL 33063 Other meetings are scheduled as needed. North County Landfill
The SWA owns and operates the North County Landfill, located west of the Florida Turnpike near the intersection of S.R. 710 and Jog Road in northern Palm Beach County. The landfill is a critical part of the county’s integrated solid waste management system, providing safe, long-term disposal for materials that cannot be recycled or processed through other facilities. Facility Overview The North County Landfill includes two landfill disposal areas – Class I and Class III – along with supporting operational facilities: Class I landfill: 262.28 acres Class III landfill: 72 acres Customer Convenience Drop-off Center: 221,484 sq. ft. Landfill Operations & Maintenance Facility: 6,700 sq. ft., powered by electricity generated at the SWA’s renewable energy facilities Capacity With more than 50 million cubic yards of airspace and a footprint of approximately 330 acres, the landfill has served Palm Beach County since 1989. Because of the opening of Renewable Energy Facility 2 in 2015, the landfill’s projected lifespan has been extended, and it’s currently expected to provide disposal capacity until 2071. (See the latest Landfill Depletion Model (PDF).) Types of Waste Accepted Class I Area The Class I landfill accepts: Ash and residue from the SWA’s renewable energy facilities Garbage and other materials that federal and state regulations require to be disposed of in a Class I landfill Class III Area The Class III area accepts materials not required to go into a Class I landfill. Common items include: Furniture Construction debris Roofing materials Wood Carpet Vegetative debris This material is collectively referred to as “trash.” How the Landfill Is Constructed The landfill is built in cells, each averaging about 10 acres. New cells are constructed as older ones are filled and closed. Every cell contains a highly-engineered liner and leachate collection system designed to protect groundwater. Liner System Each cell typically includes: Compacted sand base Geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) 60-millimeter HDPE plastic liner Two layers of geonet to promote water flow Second 60-millimeter HDPE liner Additional geonet layer Geotextile filter cloth This multi-layer system prevents leachate – water that has percolated through the waste – from reaching the water table. Leachate Collection A robust collection system sits on top of the liner: Perforated pipes Drainage medium made of rounded river rock Filter fabric Leachate flows through this system to a header, gravity line, pump station and force main before being safely injected 3,200 feet below ground into an industrial deep well.

Biosolids Processing
The SWA’s Biosolids Processing Facility (BPF), which opened in 2009, was developed to manage biosolids generated by wastewater treatment plants across Palm Beach County. The BPF is owned by the SWA and operated by a private contractor. The facility accepts up to 600 tons of biosolids per day from multiple regional partners and uses high-efficiency dryers to convert this material into a Class A, pelletized fertilizer product. By using landfill gas as its primary fuel source, the facility significantly reduces operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. How It Works Biosolids are delivered to the facility and fed into thermal dryers, where they're exposed to high temperatures that eliminate pathogens and reduce moisture content. The dried material is then formed into small pellets, measuring 1 to 4 millimeters, suitable for agricultural and landscaping use. This process transforms what was once considered a waste byproduct into a valuable resource. The facility operates continuously, handling biosolids from nearly every municipal wastewater utility in the county. Environmental Features Landfill gas utilization: The BPF uses landfill gas, supplemented by a small amount of natural gas, to fuel its drying system. This lowers greenhouse gas emissions and saves more than $30 per ton in energy costs. Odor control: A sophisticated air pollution control system captures and neutralizes odor-causing vapors during the drying process. Integrated System
Integrated Solid Waste Management System At the core of everything we do is our award-winning, globally respected integrated solid waste management system. This system is designed to maximize diversion and minimize the amount of waste sent to our landfill, while remaining both environmentally responsible and financially sound. Every component of the system is designed to divert materials from landfill disposal whenever possible. Diversion refers to any process that redirects waste away from landfill disposal through recycling, reuse, backyard composting, renewable energy recovery or beneficial reuse. We accomplish this through a combination of carefully designed education and outreach programs and state-of-the-art facilities. In Palm Beach County, household garbage, recyclables and vegetation are collected curbside and brought to one of the SWA’s six transfer stations. From there: Household garbage is transported to the SWA’s renewable energy facilities, where it's used to generate electricity. Blue and yellow bin recyclables are transported to the Recovered Materials Processing Facility, where they're sorted and processed for recycling markets. Vegetation is delivered to SWA-permitted private processors that recycle it into mulch and other beneficial products. Residents can also drop off household hazardous waste and accepted recyclables at any of the SWA’s seven Home Chemical & Recycling Centers located throughout the county. Construction & demolition (C&D) debris is handled through separate SWA-permitted private facilities and represents a large portion of the county’s recovered materials. This process allows C&D waste to be reused or recycled efficiently, reducing the volume sent to our landfill. The SWA operates a Biosolids Processing Facility, which processes wastewater treatment residuals and produces material suitable for beneficial use – further reducing what requires landfill disposal. The North County Landfill serves as the last resort within our system, used only for materials that cannot be reused, recycled or processed in any other way. The SWA also maintains the Greenway Trail System, providing public access to 300 acres of conservation land within our 1,300-acre main campus. Learn more about each component of our system using the menu. Core Elements of Our Integrated Solid Waste Management System Source Reduction & Education: Minimizing waste through education, outreach and incentive programs to prevent materials from entering the waste stream Recycling: Separating and recovering materials from waste and turning them into reusable commodities Renewable Energy/Combustion: Using municipal solid waste as a fuel source to generate electricity, while significantly reducing the volume of waste that must be landfilled Landfilling: The last-resort disposal option for materials that cannot be recycled, processed for energy recovery or otherwise diverted

How AWAY Works
When your garbage is dropped off at one the Authority's six transfers stations in the county by a garbage truck, it's transferred to one of the SWA’s 18-wheel tractor-trailer trucks. One of our 18-wheelers can haul about five to seven smaller garbage truck loads in it. This saves gas, maintenance on curbside trucks and roads, and allows curbside truck workers to get back onto their routes more quickly. The Authority’s tractor-trailers then go to our main facility where we process your solid waste in five different ways.

Recovered Materials Processing Facility
We process your recycling at our Recovered Materials Processing Facility. Your blue and yellow bin items are never mixed. We have a blue side and a yellow side of the facility and we further sort your recyclables into like items when they get here. We then bale these items and sell them through a broker to mills and factories all over the world that take your recyclables and turn them into new things. To make this processing easier, it's important to put the correct item into each bin. The blue bin gets plastic and glass food containers less than two gallons, steel and aluminum cans and milk and juice cartons. The yellow bin gets newspaper, cardboard, school and office paper and mail. In fact, the items that go into each bin are printed on the side of the bin. You can also go to swa.org/recycleright. If you're still unsure if an item should go into one of your recycle bins, throw it out.

Home Chemical & Recycling Center
The integrated system of facilities includes a Home Chemical & Recycling Center for household hazardous waste at each of our transfer stations. Usually when someone mentions hazardous waste, people don't think they have these items at home. However, we all have many chemicals in our homes. Home chemicals that need proper disposal include fluorescent light bulbs, rechargeable batteries, paint, pesticides and propane tanks. All of these items can be dropped off for free by Palm Beach County residents. Small businesses will have to pay for dropping off their hazardous waste. Each year we either recycle or safely dispose of about 4.25 million pounds of home chemicals. Find out more about home chemical disposal at swa.org/hcrc.
