Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Sumter County; Prepare for Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Livingston, by the NWS, warning of possible tropical storm-force winds and moderate flooding within the next 48 hours; residents should take immediate action to protect property and prepare for heavy rain.
Sumter County residents, particularly those in Livingston, should prepare for potential tropical storm-force winds and moderate flooding. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued a Tropical Storm Watch today, October 8, at 10:05 AM CDT, indicating that tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours. This watch is effective until 6:15 PM UTC today.
Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Residents should complete all preparations before hazardous winds arrive, which are forecast to be 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. There is potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Expected impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions may develop, particularly on bridges and elevated roadways.
Moderate flooding rain is also expected, with peak rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches, and locally higher amounts possible. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions, as evacuations and rescues are possible. Flood waters could enter some structures, and several areas may experience rapid inundation in underpasses and low-lying spots. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
