Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Sumter County: Prepare for Winds and Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Livingston, by the NWS, warning of hazardous winds up to 57 mph and moderate flooding from 3-6 inches of rain, urging residents to prepare immediately.
SUMTER COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Livingston, effective immediately as of October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham. Residents should prepare for hazardous wind conditions and significant flooding rain. This watch is set to expire on October 9 at 3:15 AM UTC.
Peak winds are forecast between 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Property protection efforts should be completed as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Rainfall amounts are predicted to be 3-6 inches, with locally higher totals, posing a moderate flooding risk. Emergency plans should include potential moderate flooding, as evacuations and rescues are possible. Heed all flood watches and warnings to prevent serious injury or loss of life.
Potential impacts include damage to lightweight outdoor structures, broken tree limbs, impassable roads due to debris, and scattered power and communication outages. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations, and rivers and tributaries could swell. Floodwaters may enter structures and cause rapid inundation in low-lying areas, making driving hazardous.
The NWS indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time. For more information and preparedness resources, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
