A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Sumter County until October 9, 2026, warning of severe winds up to 57 mph and potential moderate flooding from 3-6 inches of rain; residents should secure property and prepare for possible evacuations.
SUMTER COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Livingston, effective immediately until 9:30 AM CDT on October 9, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, advises residents to prepare for severe weather conditions.
Wind speeds are anticipated to reach 15-25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, with the potential for tropical storm force winds between 39 to 57 mph. Residents should complete all efforts to protect property as soon as possible and move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, and some impassable roads due to debris, leading to scattered power and communications outages.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with peak rainfall amounts expected to be 3-6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. This moderate flooding potential could prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings immediately.
The NWS currently indicates an unfavorable situation for tornadoes, with none expected. However, gusty winds from showers and thunderstorms may still occur.
