SUMTER COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Sumter County, including Livingston, effective immediately until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC. The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, issued the alert today, October 8, at 4:07 PM CDT, urging residents to prepare for hazardous conditions.

Actionable Information: Residents should complete all remaining efforts to protect property as soon as possible. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous. If you are in an area vulnerable to flooding, consider protective actions. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Wind Threat: Peak winds of 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. There is a potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Impacts may include damage to porches, awnings, carports, and sheds. Large tree limbs may break, and some trees could be snapped or uprooted. Scattered power and communications outages are possible, and some roads may become impassable due to debris.

Flooding Rain: A Flood Watch is in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions will become hazardous in affected areas.

Tornado Threat: The situation is currently unfavorable for tornadoes, and none are expected. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. For more information and preparedness tips, visit ready.gov/hurricanes.
