Fans at the Irish Open erupted in cheers and chants of “USA” on Sunday after President Donald Trump announced the immediate end of U.S. tariffs on Irish whiskey. The announcement came during Trump's speech at the award ceremony for the Open, which was held at the Trump International Golf Club in Doonbeg, Ireland.

Trump explained that he had been approached by many individuals requesting the removal of the tariffs, describing the situation as "so unfair." He stated, "And I said, on behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey." The crowd responded with significant applause following his declaration.

The president also took the opportunity to congratulate Shane Lowry, the winner of the Open, who secured victory for Ireland with an impressive 11-shot lead. Trump mentioned that he made a last-minute decision to stay and witness Lowry's win on Saturday night.

Trump had been touring Ireland for several days leading up to the event. Earlier on Saturday, he met with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin, where he expressed his support for Irish unification. "I don’t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you, I’d love to see it unified," Trump said. "I have friends on both sides, great people. They’re Irish people. How can they be bad, right?" He added, "I’d like to see a unified country. I think it would be a great feather in everybody’s cap if that happened. It’s going to happen eventually." He acknowledged that the U.K. "will have something to say about it obviously," but reiterated that unification would be a "great thing." British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, however, stated that the U.K. government's position on reunification remains unchanged, noting the absence of majority public support for another referendum.
