As autumn leaves begin to fall, Saint Augustine reminds residents that proper yard waste disposal is an important community recycling effort. Materials like brush, branches, grass clippings and tree limbs are collected separately and processed into compost.

To ensure yard debris is handled correctly, residents should familiarize themselves with accepted items and preparation guidelines. Accepted yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, tree limbs, brush and Christmas trees. Tree limbs and brush should be bundled and tied for collection.

The city accepts yard waste in two ways:

  • Compostable Bags: Paper or plastic bags certified as compostable are an accepted method.
  • Loose in a Container: Residents can place yard clippings, leaves and small branches loose in containers. These containers should weigh under 50 pounds.

Collected yard waste is transported to a specialized facility. Natural processes transform these organic materials into compost, diverting material from landfills and creating a useful soil amendment. Residents are encouraged to use these methods to keep their lawns and the local environment healthy.
