Saint Augustine residents in single-family homes can now apply for a free backyard compost bin through a new pilot program. The initiative encourages homeowners to reduce landfill waste by composting food and yard scraps into nutrient-rich soil for their gardens.
The program, which began accepting applications on July 14, 2025, provides eligible residents with a free 43-gallon, dual-chamber, tumbling compost bin. The city owns the bin, and residents are responsible for its maintenance and exclusive use at their homes. Collection service for compost or yard waste is not included; residents may use the finished compost in their gardens or donate it. The city does not collect or accept finished compost.
To qualify, the property must be a single-family home within St. Augustine city limits. Residents of apartments and condominiums are ineligible for this program phase.
Interested residents can submit an online application. City staff will review applications for eligibility and contact accepted applicants to arrange bin pickup. The bins are provided unassembled.
Participants who stop composting or move out of city limits must notify the city to schedule bin pickup. The bin must be empty before collection. The city disclaims responsibility for any claims or liability arising from residents' use of the compost bin.
Home composting can divert up to 25% of household waste from landfills, creating valuable soil amendment. Residents can find additional composting information through city resources.
For questions about the Residential Composting Program, email the City. To arrange for bin returns or pickups due to moving or no longer wanting the bin, contact Solid Waste at 904-825-1049.
