Cumberland County Emergency Alert System: CodeRed to Smart911
Cumberland County residents must re-register to receive emergency alerts after the county abandoned CodeRed for Rave Alert, powered by Smart911. The Emergency Management Agency announced the switch February 20. Previous CodeRed subscribers will not automatically transfer.
Rave Alert sends calls, texts or emails to registered addresses when emergencies occur. Residents can register multiple locations including homes, workplaces, camps and children's bus stops.
The address-based system differs from platforms that alert all cell phones in a geographic area. Emergency Management Director Michael Durkin said the approach offers flexibility, particularly for out-of-state property managers who need alerts for Maine locations.
"Having the capability to get information out quickly and put it directly in the hands of those who need it can make a world of difference," said 911 Director Melinda Fairbrother-Dyer.
Residents can register online through the county's dedicated webpage or call 207-893-2810. The Emergency Management Agency operates from 27 Northport Drive in Portland.
