South Miami residents should be aware of renewed child protection laws directly impacting Somerset Academy South Homestead Elementary. These laws mandate reporting of suspected child abuse, abandonment, or neglect by all school personnel, a critical measure for safeguarding students in our community.
The Florida Legislature passed these new laws in its 2014 Session following a series of articles in the Miami Herald. Those reports highlighted the deaths of 479 children due to abuse and/or neglect, prompting the state to strengthen its commitment to child safety.
All employees and agents of Somerset Academy South Homestead Elementary and Academica are legally required to report any suspected case of child abuse, abandonment, or neglect. This mandate also extends to alleged misconduct by instructional personnel or school administrators that affects a student's health, safety, or welfare. Staff members must report these cases to the Department of Children and Families (formerly HRS) at 1-800-96-ABUSE.
Failure to report such misconduct carries severe penalties, including termination of employment and revocation of an educator’s certificate. Staff members must document any report in their anecdotal records and log the phone call with Mrs. Alina R. Lopez.
