UMN Health Affairs Leadership Reflects on Institutional Purpose
Elevate Our Why johns423 Wed, 06/24/2026 - 08:42 Blog from Carol R. Bradford Thoughtful insights and updates from the Interim Executive Vice President for Health Affairs. One of the great privileges of working in academic health care is knowing that our efforts extend far beyond the tasks of any given day. Every patient we care for, every learner we mentor, every discovery we advance, and every colleague we support contributes to a larger mission of improving lives. At the University of Minnesota, that shared commitment to service, innovation, and excellence connects us to one another and to the communities we are privileged to serve. The world around us continues to evolve at a remarkable pace. New technologies emerge, healthcare needs change, educational expectations shift, and the demands on our time seem endless. In moments of uncertainty, it can be tempting to focus on the challenges before us. Yet those same moments offer an opportunity to reconnect with the deeper purpose that brought us to this work in the first place. But uncertainty should not be a signal to pause; it is a call to look beneath the surface. Now is the time to do more than just recall our purpose—we must elevate it. Elevating our "Why" is a promise to expand the horizons for our patients, families, and the communities we serve. It is the internal conviction that our work matters, acting as an anchor that keeps us from drifting when the surrounding environment feels unsettled. This elevation doesn't require a grand gesture. More often, it happens in the micro-moments woven throughout our days. We see it when we take those extra five minutes to truly hear a patient's concerns, when we encourage a learner who is finding their footing, or when a research team uncovers a new insight that moves a field forward. These moments remind us that even as the landscape changes, our impact remains constant. By recognizing and celebrating these small victories, we build the collective resilience needed to navigate larger challenges. None of us has a map that reveals every turn ahead, but we do have a compass. Our values guide us. When we remain grounded in our mission while embracing change, we create space for innovation, collaboration, and progress. When we invest in the development and well-being of our faculty, staff, and learners we strengthen a culture that fosters excellence, mentorship, and discovery. I challenge you today to reflect on the values that guide your work. What is the purpose that motivates you regardless of external circumstances? What is the "Why" that remains constant, even when everything else seems to be changing? Uncertainty is temporary, but our calling endures. When we elevate our "Why," we do more than navigate change—we inspire others to do the same. Together, we can continue raising the bar for what is possible in healthcare, education, and research, and in doing so, create a healthier future for the people and communities we serve. Educational Partner Shares Ohio Summer Activities
Summer gives Powell families a chance to explore some of Central Ohio’s best attractions together. From children’s concerts and art museums to community festivals and the Columbus Zoo, the area offers plenty of opportunities for preschoolers to discover new interests and creative experiences throughout the season. Discover Learning Through Play at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium For many families in Powell and Columbus, the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is one of the region’s most popular destinations. This world-class zoo offers preschoolers a rich environment for observation, storytelling, and imaginative play. The Zoo features many programs catered towards preschool-age children, including Little Explorers’ Base Camp, classes, overnight experiences, and more. The Columbus Zoo can feel like stepping into a storybook. Children can see animals they’ve only encountered in books and spend several minutes watching a behavior that adults might overlook. A preschooler who becomes fascinated by penguins, giraffes, or elephants may spend the rest of the day talking about them or pretending to be that animal during playtime. Enjoy Live Music at Powell’s Lolli-Pops Children’s Concert Series Live music can be a completely different experience for preschoolers than listening to a favorite song at home. Powell families can enjoy the Lolli-Pops! Children’s Concert Series, a seasonal community program designed specifically for young children and families. When they see a live concert, preschoolers have a chance to understand music in a completely different way than they would at home or in the car. A live performance often captures a child’s attention in new ways. Many preschoolers will leave a concert singing a new favorite song or talking about a performer they enjoyed, making the experience memorable long after it ends. For parents searching for music activities for preschoolers near Powell, a local concert series can be an easy way to introduce children to live performance in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Explore Creativity at the Columbus Museum of Art The Columbus Museum of Art offers several experiences designed with young visitors in mind, including the JPMorgan Chase Center for Creativity. This interactive space encourages children to explore, experiment, and create through hands-on activities. Families with preschoolers might not get a chance to see every gallery – and that’s perfectly fine. Instead of trying to see everything, families can choose a few pieces of art and ask open-ended questions. What colors do you notice? What do you think is happening in this picture? What would you make if you were the artist? Use Library Culture Passes for Art and Music Experiences The Delaware County District Library offers families access to a special Culture Pass program. The program provides access to a variety of cultural destinations and performances throughout Central Ohio. Depending on availability, the program may include opportunities connected to organizations such as the Columbus Museum of Art and Central Ohio Symphony. For Powell-area families, this can be a helpful way to explore music, art, and cultural enrichment while keeping costs manageable. Culture passes are typically limited and may require advance planning, so families should check current availability, requirements, and participating organizations before making plans. Mark Your Calendar for the Annual Powell Festival The Powell Festival is one of the community’s signature summer events, bringing families together for live entertainment, children’s activities, food vendors, and fireworks at Village Green Park. The Powell Festival is an annual event, usually held in June, just as the summer season gets underway. It’s a perfect place for preschoolers to enjoy live music, activities, and the fun atmosphere. Families should check the City of Powell’s current event details for dates, times, weather updates, and activity information before attending. Encouraging Creativity Throughout the Summer Families in Powell are fortunate to have so many opportunities for music, art, and creative exploration close to home. Children’s concerts, museum visits, community festivals, or a day at the zoo are all just a short drive away. These experiences often become some of the most memorable moments of the summer. A favorite animal, a new song, or a hands-on art project can spark interests that stay with children long after the season ends. At The Gardner School of Powell, we understand the importance of creativity in early childhood development. Summer music, art, and enrichment activities around Powell and Columbus can help families encourage curiosity, self-expression, and a lifelong love of learning.
