The City of Chelsea is inviting local workers in construction, landscaping, maintenance, design, and engineering to participate in upcoming focus groups. These sessions are crucial for gathering community input on proposed zoning and land use updates aimed at aligning new development with climate goals.
The focus groups will help the city address critical environmental issues such as stormwater flooding, coastal flooding, and urban heat mitigation. The feedback collected will inform the design of zoning and land use policies to ensure that development in Chelsea is resilient and sustainable.
The City's departments of Housing & Community Development and Permitting & Land Use Planning are collaborating with local partners GreenRoots and La Colaborativa on this initiative. These organizations are committed to engaging residents and explaining the importance of these updates for meeting the community's climate objectives.
Funding for this project comes from a $313,600 Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Action Grant awarded by the Healey-Driscoll Administration. The grant supports the "Stronger, Smarter, Greener: Implementing Resilient Zoning & Design in Chelsea" initiative. As part of this effort, the city will also develop a publicly released document outlining resilient design guidelines to serve as a resource for climate adaptation in Chelsea.
The recommendations developed from this project are designed to be flexible, allowing for future updates based on emerging climate science, new data, and evolving models of sea level rise, stormwater, and heat. This adaptability will ensure Chelsea can effectively respond to changing environmental conditions. The strategies will prioritize equitable and inclusive decision-making, ensuring that Chelsea's green zoning policies directly reflect the needs and experiences of its most climate-vulnerable residents.
The City will host three focus groups. An English-language virtual session is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Two in-person sessions will be held in Spanish: one for contractors and industry employees on Thursday, April 30, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and another for job seekers and young people on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Both Spanish-language sessions will take place at La Colaborativa, located at 63 Sixth Street, Chelsea, MA.
