Strong Thunderstorm Warning: Shelter Advised for Sheridan, Western Cherry
A strong thunderstorm with 50 mph winds and nickel-sized hail is moving through Sheridan and Western Cherry counties; NWS advises seeking indoor shelter immediately.
A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in North Platte, NE, for parts of Sheridan and Western Cherry counties. Residents in the affected areas are advised to seek shelter indoors if they are outdoors.
The alert, issued at 8:32 PM MDT on September 27, warns of a strong thunderstorm located 20 miles north of Ashby, or 35 miles south of Gordon. The storm is moving east at 15 mph and is expected to bring wind gusts up to 50 mph and nickel-sized hail.
Impacts from this storm could include gusty winds strong enough to knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.
Areas specifically impacted include Big Hill, the Intersection of Highway 61 and Survey Valley Road, and Dipping Vat Meadow. This also covers Highway 61 between mile markers 178 and 190.
The Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and is set to expire at 9:15 PM UTC (3:15 PM MDT) on September 27, 2026. This is not a tornado warning; however, residents should remain vigilant and follow the NWS's recommendation to seek indoor shelter if outside.
