The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement (MAACM) in downtown St. Petersburg is adding four new galleries in a five-story expansion. Construction at 355 4th Street North includes the installation of more than 1,500 panels of white Brazilian granite on the 11,300-square-foot addition.
The expansion will add exhibition spaces, conference rooms, work rooms, offices, and curator work areas. The museum expects the new galleries to open in stages throughout 2027, with the first set to open in late February. Exhibitions will feature photography and color woodblock prints previously shown at MAACM, alongside textiles, clocks, jewelry and other Arts and Crafts period items.
Barr&Barr is constructing the project, with Alfonso Architects of Tampa designing the expansion. Alfonso Architects also designed the original MAACM building, which opened in September 2021. The museum currently offers more than 40,000 square feet of gallery space.
MAACM is the world's only museum dedicated solely to the American Arts and Crafts movement. This late 19th-century movement reacted against mass production by emphasizing handcrafted objects, natural materials and simple, functional designs. The museum's collection includes furniture, pottery, tiles, lighting, textiles, photography, woodblock prints and metalwork from artists such as Gustav Stickley, Charles Rohlfs, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Comfort Tiffany, the Roycrofters, William Grueby and Newcomb Pottery.
