The USF Bulls face a quick turnaround as they prepare for a Thursday night matchup against UTSA in San Antonio. The team seeks to address issues following a 17-13 home loss to Temple last Saturday, Oct. 4, 2026.
Coach Brian Hartline emphasized the challenge of balancing physical recovery with mental preparation for a high-level opponent on a short week. The coaching staff adjusted schedules to keep players fresh while installing a game plan for the ESPN broadcast. The Bulls stand at 4-1 overall and 1-1 in American Conference play.
Hartline identified penalties at critical junctures, inconsistent offensive rhythm and occasional defensive lapses as pressing concerns. He noted that despite the defense ranking 19th nationally in scoring defense, a 96-yard touchdown drive by Temple in the fourth quarter highlighted costly assignment breakdowns.
Offensively, the Bulls managed only 27 points and 533 yards in their last two games against Bowling Green and Temple. Offensive lineman Caleb Cook stated the team channels frustration from the Temple loss into practice improvements, stressing that season goals remain intact.
The team evaluates why strong practice performances haven't consistently translated to game day. USF faces UTSA's experienced redshirt senior quarterback Owen McCown, who has completed 68.2 percent of his passes for 1,010 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions this season. Defensive tackle Major Dillard said the team uses the sting of the Temple loss as motivation while focusing on details and assignments during their short-week preparation.
A win tonight steadies USF's momentum and keeps them in contention for the American Conference race. A loss could raise questions about the team's ability to withstand adversity. The Bulls must rely on discipline, execution and mental sharpness to meet the challenge in San Antonio.
