Life-Threatening Storm Surge and Hurricane-Force Winds Imminent
A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Mobile Coastal areas, with life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and major flooding expected from Friday morning through Saturday morning; residents must complete preparations and move to safe shelter immediately.
MOBILE COASTAL – A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Mobile Coastal areas, including Grand Bay, Dauphin Island, and Bayou La Batre, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL issued the warning at 4:04 PM CDT on October 8th, advising residents to urgently complete preparations for life-threatening conditions.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning through Saturday morning. Evacuation efforts should be completed immediately. Winds are expected to reach tropical storm force (35-45 mph with gusts to 80 mph) starting Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning, with a potential for sustained winds of 74-110 mph. Considerable wind damage, roof failures, and mobile home destruction are anticipated. Widespread power and communication outages are likely.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain and localized higher amounts expected, potentially leading to major flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and many roads could become impassable. Tornadoes are not expected.
Residents in affected areas must move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous and leave immediately if evacuation orders are given.
