Brick’s Smoked Meats, a popular downtown Sarasota barbecue restaurant, closed Tuesday, five days ahead of its planned departure. An oven fire erupted at the State Street establishment just before 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Sarasota Fire Department and Sarasota Police responded, temporarily closing State Street until mid-afternoon. Firefighters confined the blaze to an oven and extinguished it around 8:30 a.m. No injuries were reported, and all employees were accounted for.

The restaurant had announced its final day of service would be Saturday, October 10, as it prepared for new ownership. In a social media post, owners confirmed the fire prevented continued operation. Brick’s Smoked Meats opened on May 16, 2017, and originated as a weekly pop-up at the Sarasota Farmers Market.

Monte Silva, operator of the nearby restaurant Comida, confirmed a Mexican-themed restaurant plans to occupy the former Brick’s space. The early closure prevents Brick's from fulfilling its final week of service for customers.
